Can Spillane Earn Gold in Nordic Combined?
Johnny Spillane won his first World Cup title on January 3rd in Oberhof, Germany. Nordic combined has been dominated by Norwegian athletes since the first Olympic Winter Games in 1924. Makes sense, since Norway is where it originates. The sport marries cross country skiing with ski jumping. Points are awarded for distance and style of the jump, which then decides who starts the cross country race and handicaps the next racer. Spillane finished second in the jump, which he says is his weaker talent, starting the 10k race 2 seconds behind the leader. But he finished a whopping 30 seconds ahead of Austrian (and 2006 Olympic gold medalist) Felix Gottwald. We might have to alter the top 10 list for this one!
