No win situation?
I was listening to Jim Rome today in the car because 1. that’s what my husband was listening to the last time he was in the car, so it was on when I got in and 2. he was talking about the Olympics. Specifically, he was talking about Lyndsey Vonn and her discussions about her injury over the past couple of weeks.
He implied that she was talking a lot about her injury to provide an excuse in case she didn’t medal. Of course, then he went on to say that he always asks athletes about their injuries because that’s his responsibility as a sports reporter, but he expects evasions. So, that seems to set up a no win situation for athletes. Don’t answer? You’re evasive. Answer? You’re just making excuses, just in case. Why would you ask questions that you really didn’t want answered?
(By the way, the article linked to is an excerpt of what he was saying on the show today, but has a more positive spin than how it sounded on the radio.)
What do you think? Did it bother you that Lindsey Vonn was talking about her injuries?

Athletes depend on fit bodies in order to perform. I think it’s no problem to talk about injuries any more than a race driver talks about how well his car is running. We get very excited when someone injured outperforms the fit. If Vonn had done fantastically today, we would have made her a huge hero. As it is, she blames her performance, not her injury.
Never, ever listen to Jim Rome. There are no nice words that can be used to describe him. He is a vile, malicious little thug that uses his microphone as a bully pulpit to rail against what he dearly wishes he could be.
